Late last night I finished Study Unit 20 of Financial Accounting and Reporting. It turned out to be a lot of work, considerably more than the Auditing section I went through. I hadn’t expected this because I really like financial accounting and had done well in all my courses. But financial accounting is complex, and the rules seem less intuitive than those in Auditing, at least to me. So I’m still working out some of the qualitative information and practicing with the more quantitative problems.

I’m now in the review phase. My scores on practice quizzes are marginally passing. I want to be sure of passing before I go into the exam room, so I’m going to keep reviewing and taking quizzes until my average scores go up. As much as I’d like to keep grinding through the material until my scores hover around 100%, I care more about passing and getting through the last two sections before September 1 so that I can finish school and go to work. That means I’ve got one, maybe two, weeks to study until I take the exam, pass, and move on to BEC.

Strange as it sounds, I’m having fun. It felt awesome to be finished with the last study unit, and the material was actually pretty interesting. Some of it was material I already knew. Some of it was new but similar to things I already knew. It was still a lot of work, and many times I wished I had the luxury of doing something really fun like making a pizza and getting back to the CPA exam later. It’s a lot of sacrifice, but I try to keep it in perspective. I have to balance that against my wish to finish all four sections and move onto the next step in becoming a CPA—getting work experience. So for now? Back to work.
