IIA Announces Start Date for New 3-Part Exam

October 30, 2012, by GleimBlog No comments yet

The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) has announced that the official start date for the new English language 3-part Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) exam is July 1, 2013. Registration for this revamped exam opens on May 1, 2013. Registration for the current 4-part exam closes on June 30, 2013, for Parts 1, 2, or 3 and November 30, 2013, for Part 4. December 31, 2013, is the last day on which candidates will be able to sit for any section of the 4-part exam. CIA candidates should either take any remaining sections from the 4-part exam now or begin researching the best transitional plan for themselves.

Multiple aspects of the exam are changing. In addition to the reduction in the total number of parts from 4 to 3, the number of questions and timing of the exam has been modified. Dr. Gleim, CEO of Gleim Publications and expert on the CIA exam, explains, “While the current exam demands that candidates answer 90 questions in 2 hours and 25 minutes, which is roughly 1.6 minutes per question, the new parts have a more rigorous schedule of 1.2 minutes per question (2 hours and 30 minutes for 125 questions on Part 1 and 2 hours for 100 questions on Parts 2 and 3). Also, Exam Content Outlines have been modified to reflect changes in the internal auditing body of knowledge that have occurred since the current outlines were released in 2004.”

The IIA and CIA review providers are encouraging candidates to continue working to gain their certification via the 4-part exam. “Why wait?” asks Dr. Gleim. “Candidates should go ahead and register for and pass any remaining sections in the 4-part exam. With the Gleim CIA Review System, candidates can create a study plan that allots 4 weeks, 5 weeks, or 6 weeks to study for each part, depending on how much time a week they have available. This means they will have no problem completing the 4-part exam before December 2013, even if they still have to take all 4 parts.”

Kristy Rivet, who already has her CPA license and is now a CIA candidate, agrees. “I can see why it would be tempting to wait for the new exam because it has one less part, but all things considered, I’ve decided to go ahead and take this version. Not only will I have more time to answer each question, but I know that the authors of my Gleim CIA Review materials have been perfecting their coverage of the information on the current Exam Content Outlines since they were released in 2004. Also, since I’m a CPA, I don’t have to take Part 4 anyway!”

Candidates who need help deciding which version of the exam they should take should contact the experts at Gleim Publications. They can also click here to create a free account and try the demo of the CIA Online Course.

Contact Gleim for any questions you may have regarding the CIA Exam, in its new or current format.

The CMA Exam: Notice of Discontinuation of Spreadsheet

October 8, 2012, by GleimBlog No comments yet

The Institute of Certified Management Accountants (ICMA) recently announced that effective January 1, 2013, the spreadsheet tool within the essay questions will be discontinued.

CMA candidates taking the exam in the September/October 2012 testing window may find on the essay portion of the CMA exam a question that requires them to use a spreadsheet tool. However, candidates taking the exam January 1, 2013 or later will not need to be familiar with the spreadsheet tool.

Gleim will update our Gleim Online and Essay Wizard for both Parts 1 and 2 of the CMA exam at the appropriate time.

FAQ:  CMA Exam Removal of the Spreadsheet Tool

We’ve already received some great questions regarding this change!

Q:  Do you happen to know if this means that the essay questions will be all verbal/written response with no calculations? I took part 1 last spring and plan to take part 2 in January.

A:  The essays will be completely written responses, however, these responses may still require calculations. Instead of using a spreadsheet to do the calculations you will be required to write them out in the space provided. Gleim will update our CMA courses to remove the spreadsheets where calculations are required so you can get experience writing out the calculations as you will be required on the actual exam.

Q:  Does that mean there are more MSQ, or the Exam time will be decreased?

A:  No. The exam time will still be a total of 4 hours with a maximum of 3 hours to answer 100 multiple-choice questions and 1 hour to answer 2 essays. Remember, if you finish the 100 multiple-choice questions in less than the 3 hours provided you can carry over your time to your essay questions.

Gleim CMA Review will keep you up-to-date regarding all of these changes.

CMA Exam – Second Release of Scores for the May/June Testing Window

August 12, 2012, by GleimBlog No comments yet

The ICMA releases scores approximately six weeks from the end of the month in which you’ve taken your test. This means candidates who sat for the exam in June should now be able to access their IMA Account Profile transcript at imanet.org and view their scores. The ICMA will also mail the scores to the candidates. Candidates who did not pass an exam part will receive a performance feedback report via postal mail.

We want to hear from those candidates who have recently sat for the CMA Exam. Feel free to contact us using the contact form or contact your personal counselor and tell us how we can improve our materials. Please limit your feedback to how Gleim can improve, as we are not asking candidates to divulge the nature of any questions or material found on the actual exam.

Good luck CMA Candidates! We look forward to hearing about your success!
