Overcoming the Fear

September 19, 2012, by GleimBlog No comments yet

Written By Chris V.

Well, it has been a long week. I am still recovering from my week in the Idaho mountains and I have been busy coaching football in the local youth league. I cannot believe the summer is almost over and the kids are headed back to school in a few weeks. It seems like tax season just ended! Luckily, volume has not picked up at the office yet for the final October deadline, so at least that part of my life is not hectic yet!

I keep promising myself that next Monday, I am going to schedule Part I of the EA exam. I feel like I am just about ready, but the fear of failure keeps me from signing up to take the test! I have to continue to remind myself that I am not expected and never could know everything about taxes! I tend to be a perfectionist and sometimes get discouraged when I don’t get 100% on the practice exams. Then, I tell myself that I need to study for another week before I make the call. So, this week, I make the promise that next Monday I am going to schedule Part I of the EA exam!

Good luck and happy studying this week!

Over The Hump With EA Exam Studying

September 14, 2012, by GleimBlog No comments yet

I had a great week studying for the EA exam.  I really struggled with Study Units 7 and 8, but this week I was able to devote some study time to them and achieve some pretty good scores on the practice exams.  I feel like I am on the right track and over the hump.  I am more than halfway done with the Individual section and plan to really study during my vacation next week.  I will be camping, so I will be able to spend some of each day in the tent studying the rest of the study units.

One of the Gleim audiovisual presentations mentioned at the end of the lesson that some people get stuck around the halfway point.  The presentation reminded us that we have goals to reach and to not lose track of those goals as the study process grinds on.  That was a valuable reminder for me.  I look forward to being a partner in the firm I work for, I look forward to an increase in pay and responsibility after becoming an Enrolled Agent.  Being reminded of those goals was a positive reinforcement to keep up with my study plan and to keep my head up!

I have scheduled quite a few hours of Continuing Education credits for the next few months and I am hoping they will give me a leg up when I start my next section:  Business.  I have mostly specialized in individual income tax during my career, so I am definitely more anxious to start the Business section. My goal is still to pass all three sections before February 1 and before the tax season starts in full force.

Good luck studying this week!

Beginning Studying For The Enrolled Agent (EA) Exam

Welcome to Gleim!  So I dug in and got started today.  My books have not yet arrived, but I was so excited to get going, I started by creating a “study session” in my Gleim test prep software.  I found this to be very helpful because I was able to get immediate feedback on the questions I was answering.  The feedback helped me to see if I got the answer correct, and if I didn’t, the test prep software explained why.  The math showing what numbers were used in the equation to reach the correct answer were also given.  I prefer to learn the material correctly the first time rather than by reviewing later.  I find that I learn best this way.  However, if I do stumble on a particular question and don’t feel confident that I will remember the answer next time around, I can mark it so that I will remember to review the material later.  This helps save time and keeps me from having to maintain a separate set of notes.  I really like this feature of Gleim’s product.  I am finding this to be a great study tool.

Another aspect I like about the Gleim Enrolled Agent software is that it references which study unit and subunit each question is derived from. This allows me to go back into the book and more thoroughly study the subjects I don’t know as well.  Although I am only in my first “study session,” I feel that Gleim has set up the right tools to help me be successful in passing my test the first time.  This brings me a lot of peace.  Thanks, Gleim!

Welcome New Enrolled Agent Blogger Shelley C.!

The summer is tempting me away from the confines of my office and computer, but I know that if I want to pass the EA exam, I need to be dedicated each day to studying and learning the review material.  Where do I go for help?  Gleim is a great resource for helping me learn how to pass the exam, and then outlining the steps I need to take to become an Enrolled Agent. I realize that this is an exam that I want to pass, but more importantly I want to retain the information to help me to be a greater asset to my clients’ tax needs.  I have already spoken with the Gleim team via e-mail and their response was quick and efficient.

Another step I’ve decided to take is to set up a reward system for myself for following my daily studying plan.   We all need incentives…right?  Decide what motivates you and then give yourself a personalized incentive to get the job done.  Maybe it’s a favorite meal at that special restaurant or a nature hike that you’ve been wanting to take, or maybe it’s just spending time with a loved one.  Whatever it is, be sure it is meant to motivate you.

Becoming an Enrolled Agent is a credential worth being very proud of and I look forward to sharing my learning experiences with you. In the long run, the success of studying today, will benefit you and many others tomorrow.

After I have my outline finished and my incentives in place, I will be ready to make the real commitment… set a date for the exam.  I want it to be a reasonable amount of time, but short enough that I keep a little bit of nerves churning in my stomach to keep me going.  I look forward to sharing my study habit successes and “potholes to avoid” next week!  Let’s hit the books!

The EA Exam: Stuck on Basis

September 11, 2012, by GleimBlog No comments yet

I have had a tough time this week with one of the lessons: Basis. The material is not that difficult and the lesson is pretty short, but I just can’t get the right answers on the test! I have studied and studied, but my scores are just not improving for that lesson. I think it is time to move on and come back later to review the material. I need to keep pushing forward and knock out a few more study units this week to stay on track.

I mentioned last week that I would look for an answer to a question I had concerning CPE credits. I called the IRS three times last week and had to hang up each time while on hold because we had clients coming into the office. I am not overly concerned about the CPE credits because I will surpass the IRS requirements for an RTRP or EA this year. I will let you know next week what I find out.

Every time I think about scheduling my EA exam I get nervous and think I need to wait a few more weeks! I am at the halfway point in the study plan for the Individuals section, but I just don’t feel ready to schedule the exam yet. I have decided that I will make the call on August 1 and schedule my exam for later that month. That should give me plenty of time to get done and review until I am confident and comfortable.

I am going to log on and take my final Basis quiz and move on to the next study unit. I like to spend my weekends reviewing all my completed study units, but I think this weekend I am going to plow through a few new ones and leave the reviewing for next weekend.

Good luck studying this week!

Taking a Break from the EA Exam

September 5, 2012, by GleimBlog 2 comments

It’s been one week since I passed Part 2 of the EA exam. I’d like to say I took the week off, but since I spent most of it at the IRS Tax Forum, I’m not sure exactly how “off” this past week really was. I made it a point to stop in at the Gleim Booth to say, “Hey, thanks for all your help!” The woman from Gleim cheered and promptly handed me a button that said “I passed with Gleim!”, which I promptly pinned to my shirt. I also stopped in at the Association of Enrolled Agents booth and introduced myself as a 2/3 Enrolled Agent, at which point they signed me up for membership as an Associate Member.

The day after I got home from Las Vegas, the book for Part 3 arrived. I’m happy to say that it is much slimmer than Parts 1 or 2, and there aren’t a lot of numbers in it to memorize. I haven’t done anything with it except note the size of the book and flip through its pages. I have scheduled the Part 3 test for September 28th. That gives me 8 weeks to master the seven study units in Part 3. Today will be my last day off; tomorrow the fun will begin again.

The EA Exam: Review Week

Review Week

I had an interesting and productive week studying for the EA exam. I did not make much progress on new study units and instead spent the week reviewing the study units I had already completed. It was a worthwhile endeavor, and I feel like I really have the material down. I think that short break will make my final review much easier and less stressful. There seems to be so much material to study, and I don’t want to forget what I thought I had spent enough time on the first time around.

I used the Gleim audios and the Test Prep software for my review. My scores have dramatically improved, and I feel confident with my plan to schedule my exam when I get back from my vacation in August. I plan to schedule it a month or so out to give me time to complete the other study units and have a week or so to dedicate to an overall review.

I have a plan for my upcoming vacation. I will be in the Idaho wilderness, so I will not have access to the Internet to utilize the online tools. I will spend my hot afternoons in the tent with my laptop and Study Guide plowing through the last of the study units. When I get back, I hope to breeze through the multiple-choice and true/false tests. I hope having some time away from work and the Olympics on TV will allow me to get a lot done next week.

Good luck and happy studying this week!

The Enrolled Agent Exam: One Week To Go

September 4, 2012, by GleimBlog No comments yet

It’s a lovely rainy day here in Tucson. The temperature has plunged down to the 80s, so everyone is outside enjoying the cool moisture. Everyone, that is, except me! I’m buried in my books, trying not to get stressed over the fact that I’m taking the second part of the EA Exam one mercilessly short week from today.

My one-week-left strategy is to take Sunday off (because it’s my birthday and the family has all sorts of plans for it) and then wipe everything else off the calendar for the following five days. I can’t go through every single study unit in five days, so I’ll take my counselor’s advice and use the new Gleim online Practice Exam to help pinpoint my weak areas.

Meanwhile, life continues to remind me that there is a future beyond the test date. I just got my name badge for the upcoming IRS Tax Forum in Las Vegas. I’ll be attending the event with my employer from the 2012 tax season. It’s my first time at the Tax Forum, but she’s an old hand at this. I’m looking forward to three days and three nights with a whole bunch of fellow tax geeks. I hope to be able to say “I’m an EA candidate with just one part left…and the easy part at that.”
Could everyone please think about me next Saturday afternoon and send good vibes my way?

Passed EA Part 2!

August 27, 2012, by GleimBlog No comments yet

Written By Guest Blogger Amy W.

It’s a happy day here at my house. I passed Part 2 of the EA Exam! So that’s two parts down and one (Part 3) to go.

This will be my final blog for Part 2, so I’d like to provide a recap of how this study process went. Going into it, I knew that the Gleim System was meant to be a review system, not a start-from-the-beginning system. Since all my tax experience is in individual, not business, taxation, I knew that I was facing an uphill battle. I had to do my own research on a number of topics before even starting on the material. This was not the fault of the Gleim system, of course, but of my own lack of experience.

I am nothing if not disciplined. I studied for four hours every day, taking breaks whenever the words started blurring together. As with Part 1, I learned more from working through the problems than from anything else. My process was to read the outline to get some idea of the topic, study from external sources as necessary, and then start answering the test prep questions before going to the Gleim Online material.

After completing the 7th and 14th study units, I switched to review sessions. After finishing all 20 study units, I went back to Study Unit 1 and answered all of the Test Prep questions to see what I needed to study again. Then I moved on to Study Unit 2, and so on. If I scored 90% or better on the test, I moved on; anything less than that meant I started the study unit over again. I also took a 100-question test covering all 20 study units every day and noted which sections I wasn’t doing well on. Every time I studied a study unit, I was able to understand the material a bit more.

Early this month, Monica encouraged me to set a test date. She told me that the adrenalin of having a date on the calendar would push me to complete this process. She was right. The approaching exam date forced me to stop obsessing about getting every single question right. I prepared a 10-page summary sheet and spent the final week before the test studying entirely from that.

Today was the big day. I scheduled the test for the afternoon (because I am definitely NOT a morning person) and slept as late as I could. For me, getting enough sleep is half the battle. Going into the test, I felt calm with just a hint of underlying jitters. Fortunately, my exam skills are good. I usually perform well under pressure. In fact, sometimes pressure will successfully resurrect a memory from my subconscious! That happened twice on this exam.

I finished the test in about 90 minutes. What I knew, I knew very well. All that time spent answering test prep questions paid off. And what I didn’t know, I knew that I didn’t know, and so I didn’t waste a lot of time with those questions. I ruled out the obviously incorrect answers, picked one of the remaining answers, and moved on.

After answering all the questions, I went back through the entire test. There’s some part of me that settles down after I’ve answered all the questions and I’m able to read the questions and answers more closely. Usually, our first answer is usually correct, so I resist the impulse to change answers unless I am certain. I did find two that I had certainly answered incorrectly and corrected those. One of those was a “trick” question and I had initially missed the trick. However, this exact same “trick” was in one of the Gleim questions, so I caught it easily the second time around. Even after reviewing every question, I finished in less than 2 hours. I felt good about my performance. When the nice man handed me my test results and said, “Congratulations!” I was delighted, but not surprised.

There is no doubt in my mind that I could not have succeeded without the Gleim system. The Gleim simulations and online help made all the difference in my study process. I can’t thank the good folks at accounting@gleim.com enough for their patience. I badgered them two or three times a week, trying to understand the finer points of the questions. And many thanks to Monica, who encouraged me when I was feeling overwhelmed.

Where do I go from here? Las Vegas! I’m taking a week off to attend the IRS Tax Forum. Then it’ll be on to Part 3.
