Using RTRP To Help With EA Exam Studying

January 22, 2013, by GleimBlog No comments yet

Written By Guest Blogger Danielle C.

I feel good this week, and I have a lot of motivation moving forward! I know this may sound crazy, but I have decided to study for the RTRP. I have decided to pass the RTRP exam because it is focused more on individuals. Studying for the RTRP will also help me be better prepared for the EA exam. I feel like it will help me to have both certifications! It also includes the CE credit hours that I need. My plan is to pass both tests by the end of the year. However, if it comes down to the wire, I will push the EA exam back to late January. I am very excited and very motivated, especially now that I have a date in mind. I will let you know in a few weeks if I recommend this path or if I’m just in way over my head.

I went back to Study Unit 9: “Business Property, Related Parties, and Installment Sales.” For some reason, this study unit is just not sticking. I understand the key concepts, but the little details are what keep getting me. When I finish studying, I feel good about it. When I go back to review it, I feel discouraged because I get it wrong. Study Unit 7: “Basis” is the same way. When I finished studying it, I felt good about it. When I went back to review, I tended to get those questions wrong too. I haven’t gone back yet to re-study it, but I plan to do that this week. I hope to get the last few study units finished this week. That way, when I am studying for the RTRP, all I have to do is review the material, concentrate on my problem areas, and try to get all the details down!

I hope your studies are going well!

On Moving and Gleim

I signed up for Gleim before I knew we were moving 1,000 miles away.  Gleim is so gripping and challenging that even all the excitement of moving and unpacking did not distract me.

I am normally a marathon person, but I have discovered that the mandatory breaks caused by moving have actually contributed to my retention of information.  Does it need to percolate for a while?  I don’t know; maybe I should ask Dr. Gleim.  Whenever I ask a question, I get an answer back really fast.  I love that feature of this program!

Now back to studying…

My thing with 100%

I have been moving my household to another state and trying to study for the RTRP Exam at the same time. I think it must be affecting my brain because I just can’t keep those form numbers straight!! So I decided that I needed to buckle down and master this thing. I want to get 100% on everything – whatever it takes. I love that kind of motivation because it keeps me looking for a higher understanding.

Those crazy form names kept tripping me up, and I missed several of them. I decided that I would take that final quiz as many times as necessary to get that information into my head! I will not tell you how many times it took, but I have 100% on all my work so far! In the meantime, I am understanding it so much better. Each time I listen to the information, each time I work in the Gleim learning environment, I become much more familiar with the material. Thank you Gleim!

My Passion for 100% – RTRP Exam

I love to see those scores!   Every time I take one of the quizzes, I try for 100% – I absolutely love that I can keep taking the quizzes and tests until I get 100%.  For me, it really motivates me to see why I missed that point.

Today I am trying to figure out how to learn what each form number is for in my head.  I get them so scrambled.  I get the use of the form, but to give it a number is really escaping me.  So I finally got so worked up about it that I sent a message to Dr. Gleim.  Now THAT is a very nice feature.  I can ask a question about anything and I will get a prompt answer.

Ok, I need to get back to studying and learn those form numbers!

Talk to you later.

Changing Careers: Why YL Became a RTRP Candidate!

April 19, 2012, by GleimBlog No comments yet

I was a nurse for years and then one day, I found myself accepting my father’s proposal to join his accounting firm.  I knew nothing about tax preparation or accounting!  I had been that person that just signs on the line the tax preparer points to.  None of it made any sense to me in any way.  But, the love of my father and his desire to have me near him as he grows older made me rethink my whole position on the numbers profession.

He told me that if I would join him, he would give me his practice when he retires.  So I launched into the proposal with my whole soul.  I knew that I needed to have certificates and diplomas on the walls of my office, just like he does.  So I went from the simple to the complex.  I took basic tax preparation classes with H & R Block.  I started liking the whole tax prep business, or was it really the tax preparation program that I liked?  I have not solved that question yet!

I know I have learned because now the questions I ask usually have to be sent to a higher department.  :)

So on I go to Gleim to prepare for the new federally imposed test.  I am not afraid, but rather look forward to it and am thoroughly enjoying the Gleim process of learning.

RTRP Blogger YL & Tax Season

Tax season is upon us and I am so busy doing those tax returns!  Just when I think I can spend an hour looking at Gleim RTRP, here comes another client.  I completed the first module and found the review very refreshing.  I guess I just get a certain kind of client and some parts of the tax code get totally forgotten.  This course is reminding me of those parts and helping me to understand the other parts a lot better.

I think that I am going to have to memorize some of these forms.  I get lazy because I use a fabulous program that populates the right tax forms and all I do is ask the questions.  That is probably my weakest link – the names of the forms.  I know what I am going to be doing in a week!  I have not set my test date yet – first I will have to get caught up from the tax preparing season.  Happy tax preparing to me!!

There it was.  A letter to me from the IRS!  I opened it carefully and nervously.  Oh, no!! I have to take a test before I can do taxes next year!!  What to do?  I must have some help, those tests can be tricky, I hear.  I remembered a course I had taken several years ago with Gleim and looked it up on “Google”.  “How nice,” I thought to myself, I can try it by working on the first section.”  So I did.  What a help! Somehow the repetitions and the challenge of trying to get 100% on every quiz and exam drive me on and now I am about to set a date for the taking of the exam even tho I just finished the first section – well, sort of – I haven’t gotten 100% on the last test yet!– more later.
