My 3rd week of studying has been the best yet! I finally was able to find that focus I was lacking, and have gotten on a regular cpa exam studying schedule. It feels great when I finish studying for the day and I can relax knowing that I have completed my planned section for the day. I’ve been studying a minimum of two hours every day, and have gotten though 2 chapters, which puts me on chapter 5. My husband’s family will be here this Friday (with my book –yeah!), so I just have to finish chapter 5 and chapter 6 by Friday, which is a very reachable goal.
The main difference this week from the past two weeks is that I finally got some help by asking for accountability. On my last exam, my mom was great at helping me stay on track by asking me all the time how I was doing. In the past, I’ve tried to get my husband to ask me, but I’ve decided I prefer my mom’s questions, I rather her be disappointed that I didn’t study than my husband! This past week I needed help to get into a schedule, so I asked my husband only for 3 days to make sure I studied 2 hours each day – short term it was a great plan! Once I committed for 3 days in a row to studying well, it was easier to keep going.
I think there are two keys to effective accountability – the first is to ask the right person to keep you accountable. Someone you see or talk with often, but maybe not someone too close to you (such as my husband). The person doesn’t even have to know anything about the CPA exam or accounting. Sometimes it is better to have someone keeping you accountable that isn’t also studying for the exam, because then you can’t both “slack” and call it even. I think the second key, and perhaps the most important is to have your accountability partner ask the right questions. I have learned this from personal experience. At first, my husband or my mom would ask me, “How was studying today?” or “How many hours did you study?” I can easily answer that it was great, and I may have sat with my book open for 4 hours, but didn’t get a lot accomplished. For me personally, the best question is “What chapter are you on?” If I answer “Chapter 1” for two weeks, something is wrong! I have told my mom that there are 20 chapters, and I have told her some goals I want to meet, and now every time we talk, she asks me what chapter I am on. We only talk 2-3 times a week, so almost every time we talk it should be a new chapter! Figure out the best questions for someone to ask you – direct, specific, that you can’t get around, then ask a friend, co-worker, or relative to keep you accountable. It helps a lot!
After anxiously waiting for your CPA Exam grades, the CPA scores are finally being released for those who sat in February (timing is dependant on when you sat and which section you sat for, whether you’re in a NASBA state, etc. See this article here on CPA score release timing!).

Dr. Flesher will be a guest blogger writing posts to help CMA candidates to pass the CMA exam. Dr. Flesher has written this article to let you know about his background and dedication to the CMA Exam.
DALE L. FLESHER coauthors the GLEIM CMA REVIEW books with Dr. Irvin Gleim and has done so since 1984. Follow Dr. Flesher here for updates to the exam and news about the IMA and management accounting.
Dr. Flesher is professor and Arthur Andersen Alumni Lecturer in the School of Accountancy at the University of Mississippi, and serves as associate dean of the School of Accountancy. He is the coordinator of all graduate programs in Accountancy at Ole Miss. Dr. Flesher joined the Ole Miss faculty in 1977, following four years at Appalachian State University. He received both bachelors (1967) and masters (1968) degrees from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He holds a Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Cincinnati (1975).
Dr. Flesher holds CPA, CIA, CMA, CFM, CFE, and CGFM certificates. Dr. Flesher took the CMA Exam in 1974 and holds CMA certificate No. 178 (with a Certificate of Distinguished Performance for one of the ten highest scores in the nation that year). When Dr. Flesher passed the exam, there were no review materials available to provide guidance to study. When the IMA later introduced the Certified Financial Manager Exam, he received CFM certificate No. 2.
In the early 1980s, Dr. Flesher began writing a CMA Review textbook, which he circulated to several publishers. The editors were always complimentary of the manuscript, but said the market was too small. Thus, no publisher was willing to take a risk on publishing his book. At the same time, unbeknownst to him, Gleim was also preparing a CMA Review book. Gleim was the successful publisher of the best-selling CPA Review books in the country. As a result, “Gleim” was a household name (at least in accountants’ households). Eventually, one of the editors to whom Dr. Flesher had submitted his manuscript told Gleim that Dr. Flesher was also working on a CMA Review book. As a result, Gleim called Dr. Flesher and suggested that the two should become coauthors. It did not take him long to realize that, because of Dr. Gleim’s reputation, half of the royalties on a Gleim/Flesher book would probably amount to much more than 100% of the royalties on a sole-authored Flesher book. Thus, Dr. Gleim and Dr. Flesher collaborated to produce what was to become the most successful CMA Review system in the world. At one time, about 95% of all CMAs had used the Gleim/Flesher materials to prepare for the exam. The Gleim/Flesher CMA Review is the trusted name in CMA preparation for 30+ years.
