At this time, candidates for the RTRP Exam must obtain a PTIN before they can register for the exam.
Attorneys, CPAs, EAs, supervised individuals, and preparers of returns not covered by the competency exam requirements are eligible to obtain a PTIN without passing a competency exam. However, between now and April 18, 2012, anybody over the age of 18 can apply for a PTIN without meeting any requirements.
RTRPs and others allowed to obtain a PTIN without being an attorney, CPA, or enrolled agent will have to obtain 15 hours of CPE in 2012.
This means the steps to take the RTRP and EA for the time being are as follows:
- Obtain a PTIN and pay the appropriate fees.
- Pass a suitability and compliance check.
- Pass a one-time competency exam. (RTRP and/or EA)
